This book is about using the technology now available to connect students from different countries in order to improve their language and intercultural communication skills. It originated in two co-existant circumstances: rising enthusiasm among a few European university lecturers for the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as an educational medium and the granting of EU funding for a Socrates project called ODL - On-line Discipline-specific Language learning - which allowed these enthusiasts to meet and to experiment by actually using the new media in their language classrooms. Our experimentation in the ODL project gave birth to a variety of new projects which, with time, have been given practical application in our respective educational programmes. Some pilot projects in addition to the main ODL projects are also described in this book.
